Back-to-School 2019-2020 School Year
Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. – Superintendent of Schools

The yellow school buses will soon be rolling again as we embark upon a new school year. Back-to-school planning is underway, and our educators and support staff are working diligently toprepare for the arrival of our students.

As we look forward to this new beginning, I must take the opportunity to reflect on the 2018-2019 school year and thank everyone – students, teachers and staff, parents, administrators and our loyal community partners – for making it a stellar year. Last year, our school system successfully graduated more than 3,700 seniors who secured more than $75 million in scholarships and have plans to attend colleges across the country, join the military or enter the workforce. Our talented students have achieved tremendous success in the classroom and beyond. Many of them represented our county at the state and national levels, and we’re Cumberland County Proud. This level of success would not be possible without the tremendous support from the community at-large.

We are excited about the next chapter in our journey as we move forward with the
implementation of our new strategic plan, “The Cumberland Commitment: Strategic Plan 2024.” Successful students, impactful teachers and support staff, safe learning environments and community collaboration highlight the four priorities of our strategic plan. It’s more than just a plan – it’s our roadmap to achieve educational excellence for all students.

Since joining this great community a year ago, I have been overwhelmed by our strong
community partnerships and supporters who understand the importance of investing in public education. As we begin this new school year, we will continue to collectively engage school staff, parents and community stakeholders in building student success. Together, we will work toward one common goal – graduating every student competitive, collaborative, and successful in our global world
